Textile Engineering: Textile Chemistry and Fiber Science Specialty
Textile engineering was one of the five disciplines that was offered to the students at the beginning of the establishment of Tehran Polytechnic (Amirkabir University of Technology). Due to the importance of the textile industry and the development of this industry in the past century, graduates have played a great role in the development and industrial economic growth of the country. In this discipline, students become familiar with the science and knowledge required to produce textile products, in other words, by using engineering knowledge and science they gain the required skills.
Today, textile products are not only used as a part of basic clothing needs but also in a variety of industries, from medicine to aerospace, civil engineering and etc. In other words, they are considered as one of the most valuable value-added industries in the world.
Textile Chemistry and Fiber Science program was one of the first programs in textile engineering, which was offered with the establishment of the Textile and Polymer Engineering Institute in 1965 in Tehran polytechnic and when in 1979 department’s name changed to Textile Engineering, offering Textile Chemistry and Fiber Science program continued and has been offered to the students to this day. With the approval of the Planning Council of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in 2018, this program was divided into two programs; Textile chemistry and dye engineering and Fiber engineering.
Textile Chemistry and Dye Engineering
In this program, in addition to engineering and basic courses, students are taught specialized courses on knowledge of technologies, and the use of chemicals and polymers in textiles, including dye and dyeing, printing, finishing, nanotechnology, biology, and wastewater treatments. Therefore, students with the knowledge they gain from different processes will be able to be employed in different industries according to the acquired chemical ability.
In this regard, students take mathematics, physics, and basic chemistry courses that are offered to all technical and engineering students. Students are also taught the basics of engineering, including statics, material strength, dynamics, thermodynamics, engineering mathematics, and fluid mechanics.
Specialized courses include:
-
Fiber and polymer science will be the students' first acquaintance with the raw materials used in the textile industry to produce textile goods.
-
Fiber Physics to acquaint students with the various physical properties of fibers.
-
Fiber production processes; familiarity with synthetic and regenerative fiber production methods.
-
Dyeing processes; Familiarity with the phenomena of dye absorption and the use of natural and synthetic materials for dyeing textile products.
-
Finishing processes; different methods of finishing different fabrics to give them required properties.
-
Polymer Chemistry: Methods of synthesizing different polymers to produce fibers or to be used in the production processes of textile products.
-
Natural fiber chemistry; Familiarity with the structure of natural fibers such as cellulose, protein, silk.
-

Textile printing and various printing methods, along with various laboratories, teach the feasibility of each process and the impact of different variables on the final properties of the product.
Due to the great variety of chemical processes, graduates will have a particularly good ability to analyze these processes and will be able to participate in various units of dyeing, finishing, and printing. Also, due to the acquired chemical ability, they can be absorbed in other chemical industries due to qualifying in abundant courses. They will be able to work on troubleshooting of the operations which were performed on the fabric. They will be able to work in various industrial laboratories as well as product quality control.
Fiber Engineering Program
Due to the great importance of synthetic fibers and their role in the production of textile products, it is one of the programs that has been welcomed by students. In this program, students after obtaining general courses in textile engineering, gain additional knowledge on the polymeric material structure, synthesis of polymeric materials, their physical and chemical behavior during fiber production and different methods of fiber production and the study of fiber properties to convert them into different textile products and industrial textiles.
In this program, in addition to taking mathematics, physics, chemistry and technical engineering courses such as statics, the strength of materials, dynamics, thermodynamics, and engineering mathematics, and fluid mechanics, students also learn their specialized courses, which include the following courses:

The growth of consumption of synthetic fibers in the world has increased drastically the last 20 years so that today synthetic fibers are used more than natural fibers in the textile industry; therefore, the production units of synthetic fibers in Iran have also grown. Many polymer units have been established in the country and graduates of this field will be able to analyze chemical processes and can cooperate in various industries related to polymers. Due to the use of synthetic fibers in other sectors such as medical products, filters, flooring, machine-made carpets, etc., graduates, can work for many fiber production units and management sections, and have the possibility of being employed in industries related to fiber production for other applications. Familiarity with the principles of chemical and polymer engineering will double the ability of graduates to cooperate in industrial units related to the above.
